Celebrate Kansas Voices: C. L. Brown
For my final assignment in DED 318: Educational Technology for Teaching and Learning, I chose to create an Adobe Spark Page centered around the late great C. L. Brown, a huge historical figure from my hometown of Abilene, Kansas. Because my family has lived in Abilene for generations, I’ve developed extensive knowledge about the surprisingly huge role our town has played in Kansas history. I grew up at the end of the Chisholm Trail, near the childhood home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the infamous Old Abilene Town, in a place revolutionized by inventions like the telephone. This project gave me a chance to share that small-town knowledge, traditionally passed down by parents and grandparents, with a larger audience.
C.L. Brown and his family have been pillars of our community for almost a century now, with not nearly enough recognition for the incredible gifts they offer. Celebrate Kansas Voices represents figures like them who have devoted their lives to small towns out of kindness, generosity, and citizenship. I thoroughly enjoyed rediscovering the stories of my community, and exploring a familiar place with fresh eyes. I chose to share my experiences with Adobe Spark Page, because it’s very accessible and easy to create with, and it has a particularly clean look. I included photos from our local photo museum as well as photos I took around town myself, to show the lasting effect a single person can have, if only they take the time and energy to help others. Finally, I added a pair of videos made by residents of Abilene who also appreciate local history and wish to show the impact C. L. Brown had on their own lives.
